Student Spotlight: BU MET 4-Month Internship Program in Boston

Boston University Metropolitan College collaborated with Global Career Center (GCC) on a four-month internship program in Boston. This blog features a profile of Enterprise Risk Management Master's student, Miguel Efrain Esparza Silva.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity to complete my Spring 2026 internship with GotInfo through the Global Career Center. This experience allowed me to collaborate in an international environment while applying my academic background in risk management, sustainability, and data strategy in a real, hands-on startup setting. It also strengthened my professional experience, gave me exposure to the international market, and helped me contribute to work aimed at creating a meaningful impact in the industry and the community.

During my internship, I worked on several strategic projects that supported GotInfo’s growth and early operational development. My work went beyond risk management; it also included developing consumer and business surveys, researching California environmental policies and funding opportunities, preparing risk and operational readiness materials, building an emissions calculator, and organizing the main deliverables into an eBinder for future interns and collaborators. These projects helped me understand how a startup can use data, sustainability, and risk analysis to make better decisions, strengthen operational readiness, and prepare for scalable growth.

What I learned from this internship is that sustainability, risk management, and data strategy are deeply connected in a startup environment. Startups operate in volatile, unpredictable conditions, so the ability to adapt quickly and make informed decisions is essential. In sustainability, I learned that measuring impact requires both technical accuracy and reliable user input. For example, the emissions calculator helped me understand not only how user behavior can translate into avoided CO₂ emissions, but also how important data quality is for generating credible results.

This internship had a great impact on my career because it helped me understand that people from different cultures, backgrounds, and places share the same purpose: creating impact and working cohesively toward the same objective. It also showed me that I am part of something bigger that can help many people, and that if we want to develop and move forward, we need to adapt, even when time zones or language become barriers. This internship changed my perspective by showing me that we should not be limited by the opportunities of a single place, but should instead be willing to expand and see beyond what lies within, recognizing that there will be companies, organizations, and startups that can benefit from our help.  

I am deeply grateful to Boston University and BU MET International for giving me the opportunity to grow in an international academic and professional environment. This experience helped me develop not only professionally but also personally, by challenging me to adapt, communicate, and contribute across cultures and contexts. I am also thankful to the Global Career Center for opening the door to this internship opportunity, and to Magdalena M. Zepeda-SeLegue and the GotInfo team for trusting me with meaningful projects that allowed me to contribute, learn, and grow. I would also like to thank Professor Mark Carroll, whose guidance and advice helped me approach the project with a stronger strategic and risk-management perspective. More broadly, I am thankful to the professors and mentors whose teaching helped shape how I structured my work and connected academic knowledge to real business challenges."
