Lehigh University collaborated with Global Career Center (GCC) on an 8-week internship program in Singapore. This blog post features a profile of Biology student at Lehigh University, DeAndrea Daughtry.

"When given the opportunity to choose between interning in Japan or Singapore, I ultimately selected Singapore because it offered more healthcare-related opportunities that aligned closely with my interests and career goals.
During my internship with Medlink Healthcare Group, I experienced significant growth both professionally and personally. Professionally, I gained valuable insight into the business side of healthcare, which broadened my understanding of the diverse career paths available in the field. Before this experience, I primarily envisioned myself working in a hospital or clinical setting.
However, being exposed to Medlink’s wide range of services opened my mind to alternative ways of pursuing my passion for healthcare—such as developing or providing medical services that support communities with limited access to quality care. My work on the business plan for Medlink’s Malaysia expansion, along with various administrative responsibilities, sharpened my problem-solving skills and strengthened my confidence in presenting to leadership and collaborating with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

On a personal level, living and working in Singapore pushed me outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to gain independence. Traveling internationally for the first time, I embraced new experiences, from trying unfamiliar foods to engaging in cultural activities, which deepened my appreciation for diversity. I was also struck by how safe Singapore felt, which gave me the confidence to explore the country on my own.

This experience encouraged me to think more globally about healthcare and cultural exchange, and I return to Lehigh not only as a more confident individual but also with a broadened perspective that I look forward to applying in my academic, professional, and community endeavors.

Overall, this internship exceeded my expectations. The kindness of the people I met, combined with the professional insights I gained, made this experience truly transformative. I am grateful for the opportunity and excited to carry forward the lessons I’ve learned."
